To equip customers with more information of VAS Group’s products and services, the VAS Steel Handbook provides knowledge on various types of steel.
1. ABOUT VAS GROUP
VAS Group stands for Vietnam Advanced Spirit Nghi Son Group Joint Stock Company – Top 3 largest steel manufacturing enterprises in Vietnam. With over 25 years of experience, VAS Group operates a network of factories that produce steel billets and rolled steel across the country with the combined annual capacities of 4.35 million tons of billets and 2.5 million tons of rolling steel.
VAS Steel is the common name for steel billet and construction steel products [included of rebar and wire rod] manufactured by the VAS Group from five factories operated by the member companies of the Group:
● VAS Steel An Hung Tuong [AHT]
● Danang Steel [DNS]
● VAS Steel Viet My [VMS]
● VAS Steel Tue Minh [TMS]
● VAS Steel Nghi Son [NSS]
The aforementioned factories are located across all three main regions, along with Nghi Son International Port [NSIP], forming a complete ecosystem ready to promptly address the needs of both domestic and foreign customers.

Applying world – leading technology from Europe, VAS persistently invests in innovation and modernizing new production technology, expanding modern scale, with scrap iron and steel recycling lines to reduce gas emissions of CO2, thus contributing to minimizing the greenhouse effect. This effort creates "Green Steel" products that meet international quality standards. VAS Group is a pioneer that applies the circular economy model towards a "Green, Clean" heavy industry.
2. STEEL CLASSIFICATION
To bring customers for more information of VAS Group’s products and services, the VAS Steel Handbook provides knowledge on various types of steel together with detailed technical specifications so that customers and partners may gain a deeper understanding of the quality and superiority of furnished steel products of the VAS Group.
Steel is the alloy fitting of iron and carbon as well as other elements, including: Mn, Si, P, S, Cu, Cr, Ni,...

Depending on the chemical constitution of elements in the steel, we can classify steel into two groups, namely carbon steel and alloy steel.
2.1. Carbon steel: This type of steel accounts for the majority of steel production [about 80%-90%], it includes 2 main elements, i.e., iron and carbon.
2.2. Alloy steel: Beside iron, carbon, and main elements, specific amounts of alloy elements are introduced to alter the organization and attributes of steel to conform to usage needs. Commonly introduced elements include: Mn, Si, Cr, Ni…
Classification of carbon steel and alloy steel
3. ELEMENTS THAT DETERMINE STEEL ATTRIBUTES
3.1. Carbon: This is the most important element that determines the organization, attributes, and usage of steel. Depending on carbon percentage [%C], steel can be categorized into 4 groups with different mechanical properties and usage:
3.1.1. Low-carbon steel [%C 0.3%]: Elastic but low durability and hardiness [Construction steel].
3.1.2. Medium-Carbon steel [%C from 0.3 – 0.5%]: Used to produce high-strength steel bars and machine parts that are subject to high static and impact loads.
3.1.3. Fair-Carbon steel [%C from 0.50 – 0.65%]: Has an elasticity ratio and is used for spring steel and restressed steel.
3.1.4. High-Carbon steel [%C 0.7%]: Has high hardiness, used as measurement equipment, knives, stamping mold.
3.2. Manganese: This element has a positive effect on the mechanical properties, when dissolved, it can improve the durability and hardiness of steel.
3.3. Siliceous: Similar to manganese, siliceous dissolved in ferrite [the crystallographic structure that constitutes steel] also improves durability and hardiness and increases the mechanical properties of steel.
